Tg Regione Puglia for its daily segment “A School for the Future” selected the IISS “Scipione Staffa” of Trinitapoli as a school of excellence projected into the future, conducting a live broadcast on April 6, 2016. The Institute has in fact adhered for several years to the Extreme Energy Events subnuclear physics project for the study of cosmic rays, a brilliant intuition by scientist Antonino Zichichi, with the aim of “bringing science to the heart of young people.” The school, thanks to close collaboration with the CENTRO FERMI of Rome, CERN in Geneva, CNAF in Bologna, INFN in Bari, and the Interuniversity Physics Department of Bari, boasts a telescope, detector of the aforementioned cosmic rays, built by some students of the Institute itself during a work stage in 2009 at CERN in Geneva. The project involves upper high school students from the Classical Lyceum and Human Sciences and is coordinated by teachers Margherita Lafata and Giacomo di Staso, while the national referent is Prof. Marcello Abbrescia, Physics professor at the University of Bari.
