On Saturday, February 13, 2016, the cosmic ray detector built by Marconi Scientific High School students at CERN in Geneva was inaugurated in the school’s main hall, as part of the EEE (Extreme Energy Events) Project coordinated by Prof. Cristina Marconi. The event was introduced by Principal Prof. Adriano Cappellini and attended by Prof. Luisa Cifarelli and Dr. Rosario Nania (President and Scientific Director of Centro Fermi in Rome), Prof. Gabriella Sartorelli and Dr. Garbini from the University of Bologna. Local Parma representatives included MP Giuseppe Romanini, Deputy Mayor Nicoletta Paci, engineer Gian Paolo Dallara, Dr. Panizza, and Amici del Marconi Association President Prof. Isa Guastalla, all expressing satisfaction with the initiative. As reported by Gazzetta di Parma, the detector’s activation in November 2015 turns Marconi into an advanced research lab: networked with 50 other nationwide instruments to study high-energy cosmic rays while engaging youth in science—”Bringing Science to the Heart of Young People,” as project promoter Antonino Zichichi states. High school students starred in the event, competently explaining cosmic rays and their effects. They now embark on an exciting new phase: analyzing telescope data as lead actors in cutting-edge research.
