On April 15, 2016, the second MRPC EEE Telescope was inaugurated at the former surveying section of the Grosseto Technological Hub (Student Citadel Schools). This telescope complements the one already operating at ITI P. Porciatti, inaugurated in October 2012 in the presence of Prof. Antonino Zichichi.
The inauguration was attended by Prof. Luisa Cifarelli, who symbolically cut the ribbon, and School Principal Prof. Antonella Baffetti. It was broadcast live from Grosseto’s Municipal Council chamber, where the Central Italy EEE Project schools conference was underway.
This second telescope enhances data acquisition for cosmic ray detection, enabling researchers to identify and verify muon coincidences between the two sites, less than 500 meters apart. The project holds indisputable scientific value, aiming to study still poorly understood extreme energy events through a nationwide telescope network.
For involved students, the project’s impact is profound: they contributed by building detection chambers at CERN in Geneva, actively managing and monitoring installations, and developing devices to simplify control of operations and material consumption. Their participation in a major scientific experiment bridges the gap between advanced physics and everyday reality, immersing them in the study of our surrounding universe.
